Our bank aims to play a leading role in the fight against climate change, positioning itself as one of the key players in the sector through all its activities at the Headquarters and branches. With its corporate culture and vision focused on a sustainable future, Albaraka Türk continues to contribute to its stakeholders through all its banking, environmental, social, and governance activities. To this end, the bank has developed its Sustainability Policy and Environmental Policy. These policies ensure that the necessary actions related to environmental issues are taken within the bank, managed, and reported to the public.

On the other hand, our bank does not finance projects that are harmful to the environment, damage waterways and watersheds, or have an impact on these areas, with the credit provided by the World Bank.

Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Sustainability Index

Albaraka Türk is included in the BIST Sustainability Index, which consists of companies listed on Borsa Istanbul with high corporate sustainability performances. Companies in the index are selected based on assessments in key areas such as environmental policy, environmental management systems, biodiversity policy, climate change management, board structure, anti-bribery policy, anti-bribery systems, human rights policy, human rights systems, and health and safety systems. Since 2019, Albaraka Türk has been part of the index and continues to make ongoing improvements and developments in line with the index rules, international regulations, and best practices.

CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project)

Since 2017, Albaraka Türk has voluntarily answered the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Climate Change and Water Security surveys which is considered as the most comprehensive and prestigious environmental project in the world and aims to collect and share information that will enable companies, investors and governments to take action against the threat of climate change.

Albaraka Türk's CDP 2020 Climate Change grade was announced as A- and Water Security grade as B-, and our Bank was awarded the CDP 2020 Climate Leadership.

Provided data for CDP surveys are verified by 3rd party companies. Albaraka Türk’s answers of the climate change and water security questionnaires and the verification report regarding these answers for the relevant reporting periods are below.

Sustainability Reporting in Compliance with Turkey Sustainability Reporting Standards (TSRS)

Albaraka Türk published its first Sustainability Report in compliance with TSRS in 2024. The report discloses its sustainability activities, financial information related to sustainability, and announces the climate risks and opportunities it has identified. You can access the report via the link.

LEED Gold Green Building Certification

Albaraka Türk's Headquarters building, constructed with the latest technologies, is the first Bank Headquarters in Turkey to receive the LEED GOLD certification. The certification was obtained as part of the efforts that began in 2016. Albaraka Türk earned this certification based on criteria such as carbon footprint, water and energy efficiency, environmental sensitivity of the materials and resources used, indoor environmental quality, and innovation.

Zero Waste Project

The works carried out in our Bank within the scope of Zero Waste Project launched by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization are as follows:

Prevention/Reduction:

  • Copiers have been reprogrammed to avoid unnecessary printouts that are sent to the printer and forgotten or resent to the printer, and duplex printing option has been set to default on devices.
  • Wastepaper is delivered to the companies assigned by the municipalities.
  • Water saving apparatuses that provide the same effect with less water by increasing the water pressure have been installed in our lavatory faucets in our Headquarters building.
  • Vehicle tracking system has been installed in branch marketing vehicles and vehicle usage is monitored in detail.
  • The exterior of Headquarters building has been covered with solar film. In this way, the sun rays coming into the building are prevented and the cooling systems are operated less.
  • In order to prevent waste batteries from being released to the nature, the batteries are collected separately in our Headquarters building.

Reuse:

  • The carton boxes used for the transportation of Headquarters building are used approximately 15 times and the carton boxes that have completed their economic life are delivered to the recycling facilities of the municipalities.
  • Periodical maintenance works of the tools, equipment and fixtures in our Bank are carried out regularly and in this way our equipment is used for a long time.
  • Artesian water and gray water are used in rest rooms, washbasins, pools and for garden irrigation and cleaning works, instead of mains water.

Purchase:

  • Environmentally sensitive products are preferred within the scope of our purchasing activities.
  • The scope of the Zero Waste Project will be expanded and efforts will continue in the coming period.
  • In the light of these projects, Albaraka Türk will continue its fight against climate change by carrying out all of its activities in its Headquarters and branches.
  • Within the framework of all these efforts, Albaraka Türk has spent approximately 1,000,000 TL for Environmental Management System and sustainability.

ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certification

ISO 50001 helps establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance and efficiency, guiding the reduction of energy consumption and costs.

As part of its sustainability efforts, Albaraka Türk completed its work to obtain the ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certification in 2023 and earned the certification.

Renewable Energy Certificate

Our bank has sourced 13,819.66 MWH of electricity from renewable energy sources for the year 2024. You can view our 2024 I-REC certificate. Link
