I have first met the New Mosque Public Fountain Epitaph from the photographs I’ve seen at my teacher, Uğur Derman, in 1987. Later, the photographs that he had given us were reproduced by the calligraphists and they have passed from hand to hand until it spread around the calligraphy community in a way that exceeds the boundaries.
This epitaph written by Sami Efendi (1838– 1912), who is considered as the person that completed the school of Rakım (1758–1826) in Jali Thuluth, has deeply inspired the calligraphers. It is the first reference and the source of inspiration of Jali Thuluth calligraphy even today. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said that it is the most famous epitaph among calligraphers.
